Director's Report for
September
One could say that September is the
busiest month around the Council on Aging, but then when you compare
it with all the other months, you realize very quickly that they are
all busy. There is not a
spare minute that we are not tending to services and activities or
planning new ones. And
there is still so much we want to do.
Even with two hurricanes in September, we managed to keep
things running smoothly and only missed one day of service.
We are grateful that Sabine Parish was spared the destruction
of past hurricane seasons.
Activities are continuing at the
Toledo Center and our participants have not only been very patient
with the remodeling project, but they seem to be as excited as we
are about all the changes taking place.
The coffee corner is complete and the offices, kitchen and
restrooms will soon have a new look.
I can’t say enough good things about the Toledo Center staff
and our contractor, Alan Rivers, and his crew.
We are also very thankful for the generous donation from the
Zwolle Toledo Lions Club which has helped fund the kitchen
renovations. It is truly
a team effort and the results will make us all proud.
The Walking Path at the Legacy
Building is close to completion.
It is wonderful to see so many people walking early in the
mornings. We have had an
average of 6 each day for the past week, and we are not even
finished with construction.
Our new parking lot will get plenty of use as well.
I’m sure Judy and Jeri will put this new area in their
activity plans for the fall months.
Services last month continued at a
good pace. In August we served 1,556 Congregate
meals at our meal sites and delivered 4,264 meals to Home
Bound seniors. We
provided 192 units of homemaker service for our seniors, 220 hours
of Caregiver services, and 117 contacts have been made for Outreach,
Information & Assistance.
We provided 560 units of transportation, 1035 units of
wellness, 1,688 units of recreation and 84 calls to seniors were
made for Telephone Reassurance.
The Alzheimer’s Support Group
meeting, which was held on September 8th at the Toledo
Center, was very successful. Sarah House will be facilitating these
meetings which will be held at 2 p.m. on the second Monday of each
month. The small meeting
room of the Toledo Center was perfect for this session and we expect
the group to grow as word spreads of the benefits of sharing during
this time.
We had a great time today at Senior Day at the
Fair. Thanks to our
generous board members, vendors, political candidates and local
merchants we were able to give many nice door prizes.
Thanks also to Tax Assessor Carroll Ellzey, Clerk of Court
Tammy Foster, and Sheriff Guffey Lynn Pattison and the trustees who
provided, cooked and served the wonderful lunch and to the Pilot
Club for donating cakes for dessert.
We are very fortunate to have so many concerned citizens in
our parish who are willing to support us with this fun filled day at
the fair. My sincere
thanks to all who contributed!
Be sure to check your October
calendars for coming activities. A complete calendar, listing all
the regularly scheduled activities is available by calling our
office 256-4140 or checking out our website (
